ULTRASOUND

We use this equipment for the treatment of soft tissue injuries to promote healing. Our Physio will administer the ultrasound via a metal transducer, using a transmission gel to ensure the best possible contact. The ultrasound waves penetrate the skin to treat the affected area, increasing blood flow and offering pain relief.

POSITIONAL THERAPY

This is a very simple techniques. If the tissues are inappropriately tense, indurated, hypertonic, shortened or contracted, the therapeutic intent is usually to release these undesirable states in order to encourage a retreat of a restriction barriers. The methods which can achieve this are commonly of a direct nature, the soft tissue in question may be stretched, massaged or mobilised and manipulated using dozens of perfectly appropriate techniques.

MANIPULATIONS

Joints are normally free and unrestricted. We accomplish nothing through moving it through a normal range. But in cases where a joint is abnormal or hindered the essence of manipulation is directed at the recovery of the underlying cause by massage and passive movements and as far as is possible the restoration of the joint to it's normality.

MOBILISATIONS

Mobilisation (sometimes known as active rest) is the key to a speedy recovery. With active movements by the patient taking the injured part through its full pain free range, without any weight or resistance. Not only does this work the muscles and so prevent atrophy, but it also shows the therapist the safe range to work within.

REMEDIAL EXERCISE REHABILITATION

Once your treatment is complete and the symptoms have been removed we can implement a rehabilitation program to ensure that you suffer no further problems. As part of our diagnosis we will identify the weakness that has led to your injury and will prescribe a rehabilitation exercise program to strengthen the area.

HEAT TREATMENTS

Heat has been used for thousands of years in the treatment of injuries and the relief of pain. Our heat lamps can be used to promote a warming effect on the affected area, increasing circulation, reducing pain and stiffness and also reducing recovery time. Our equipment allows for precise positioning to allow the best possible results from the treatment.

EXERCISE PRESCRIPTION

For home help or the gym. No matter how big or small the problem we can offer a whole range of exercise to help gain mobility, strength, movement in all aspects of daily life in general or the sporting world, to suit your needs.

REMEDIAL MASSAGE

Massage is a term to signify a group of procedures, which are generally done with the hands such as friction, kneading, manipulations, rubbing and percussion of external tissues of the body in a variety of ways, either with curative, palliative or hygienic objectives.

SPORTS MASSAGE

Sports massage is the best form of treatment for muscle tension and has a distinct advantage over most therapies in that sports massage can be used on a regular basis to help prevent overuse injuries as well as being used as a symptom based approach to the treatment of specific injuries.

EFFLEURAGE

Perhaps the best known and most common use of all massage techniques is effleurage, the stroking or gliding movement of massage. The word is derived from the French word effleurer which means “to flow or guide” or “skin the surface”. Effleurage is the massage stroke or initial contact with the patient and as such it is important it is performed with great skill.

PETTRISAGE

Petrissage is quite different to effleurage and again it must be perfected over a period of time for a practitioner to become an expert. The word is derived from the French language and has a literal meaning of “to mash or knead with the hands”. The principal movement is that of picking up or lifting the muscles. The muscles are picked or lifted with the hollow of the palms of the hand in a series of rhythmic movements.

CONNECTIVE TISSUE MASSAGE

Whether for sporting competition, work or general maintenance of posture everyone needs muscles that are “healthy”. This means they should not only be strong but also supple and in balance. Regular manipulation of the soft tissues has an essential role to play in achieving this state and connective tissue massage (CTM) will transform any treatment allowing specific problems to be rapidly and effectively addressed.

CROSS FIBRE FRICTIONS

Cross fibre frictions are applied by the finger tips or the thumb. There is the possibility of some local soreness but the longer term effects outweigh any possible short term soreness.

Local cross fibre strokes to connective tissue generally leave no soreness.
The therapist applies three firm strokes to each origin and insertion point, again with steady rhythmic flow, The purpose of the cross fibre frictions are to loosen the scar tissue and adhesions that may exist in the tendons and sheathings to realign damaged fibres, to render tissue more pliable and less likely to irritate surrounding tissues.

TAPOTEMENT

apotement techniques are used for a stimulating effect and these techniques have been described as a series of brisk blows. An alternative term of description is "percussion", which means "striking".

Kinesiology Taping

Kinesiology Taping

The following are the current theories of how properly applied Kinesio Tape works.

On skin, the Kinesio Tape pulls the upper layers of skin, creating more space between the dermis and the muscle. The space created is believed to relieve pressure on the lymph channels in the area between the muscle and the dermis, creating more space for lymph flow and thus better lymph drainage through an affected area. This space also houses various nerve receptors that send specific information to the brain. When the space between the epidermis and the muscle is compressed, such as during an injury, these nerve receptors are compressed and send information to the brain regarding continuous touch, light touch, cold, pain, pressure, and heat. This information causes the brain to send out certain signals to the body on how to react to particular stimuli. Kinesio Tape alters the information that these receptors send to the brain and causes a less reactive response in the body, allowing the body to work in a more normal manner and removing some of the roadblocks that normally slow down the healing process.

Kinesio Tape also is felt to affect deeper tissues in the body. Increased space theoretically allows muscles greater contractility, which in turn pushes more fluid through the muscle, resulting in better muscle performance. The end results are believed to be reduced muscle fatigue, increase in range of motion, and better quality of muscle contraction.

Kinesio Tex Tape is used to improve joint alignment by affecting the muscles and fascia and can reduce poor function of a joint by influencing opposing muscle groups and joint mobility.
