Pain on the front of the leg coming on after exercise, often taking longer to disappear at rest, may be due to the muscle swelling that always occurs with exercise distending the fairly rigid compartment in which it is contained. If you ignore it, it will progress and become chronic.
It is an overuse condition. Ice is the immediate treatment with complete rest and elevation for a few days to let the congestion settle down. When you start back to activity, begin at lower level and increase gradually to allow your body to adapt. If the condition fails to settle, it may be that pain is the result of stress fracture and you should seek medical help.
If after trying the above your shin splints are still causing you discomfort, you are still in pain, it is restricting your movement or generally affecting your quality of life, please feel free to get in touch for a no obligation consultation at our sports injury clinic in Hull.
Patients GP should always be consulted to rule out any underlying medical condition.
